A lifetime of nutrition

During pregnancy it is important for the mother to watch what she is eating.  She needs a diet high in protein is very important. Eating a well rounded diet including fruits and vegetables will ensure you are getting the nutrients you and your baby need.  Getting at least 400 micrograms of folic acid a day during pregnancy can reduce the risk of your baby getting spina bifida.

During infancy breast feeding or formula feeding are how you get all of your nutrition.  Babies grow faster during their first year of life, than they ever will again.  It is important to give your baby a diet rich in Vitamins A, D, and calcium, and the energy nutrients. Because they are growing so rapidly, their metabolic rate is higher. If you are breastfeeding, you will need to make sure you are eating the correct diet, as  your baby gets all its nutrition from you until you start to add in solid foods.

During childhood, the nutrition needs change yet again.  "Most children take in too little vitamin E, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and fiber and too much dietary fat and added sugar for health" (Sizer & Whitney, 2017. Pg. 563).  It is important to make sure that your child gets enough of these daily for health.  Starting your child on healthy eating habits will aid them later in life to make good food choices.

By the time we reach adolescence, we have established our eating habits for the most part.  When we reach our teen year, we are trying to assert our own decision making skills, and that includes what we decide to eat.  Many times as teens we choose the bad foods, because of taste and convenience.  "Research has explored social, environmental, and behavioral influences on adolescent obesity and diabetes including nutrition behaviors related to high-sugar beverage intake" (Williams, et.al., 2017).  Teaching the importance of having a low sugar diet can help our teens make better choices.

Our nutritional needs change yet again as we reach adulthood.  Depending on our lifestyle (sedentary or active) is how many calories we need daily.  Eating too little or too many can cause issues in our bodies. Continuing to eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables and lean cuts of meat can help keep our bodies working properly.

As you can see, each phase of our life requires different nutritional needs.  It is up to us to make sure we are making the right choices for our daily needs.
